Blindness is a terrible disease nobody wishes for but some people have of their own ignorance made themselves blind. This 33 year old mother of 2 had viral conjunctivitis (popularly called appollo) and was advised to put early morning urine in her eyes. Unfortunately for her she had asymptomatic gonorrhoea and she introduced the organism to her eye through the urine. By the time I saw in clinic nothing could be done to sa lvage her vision as the Nesseria gonorrhoea resulted in eye infection that caused cornea ulcer and cornea opacity finally. She lost her vision simply because she put urine in her eyes. Another sad case is that of a 3 month old baby whose mother put breast milk in both eyes because the eyes were red. Breast milk being a good culture medium allowed organisms to infect this child’s cornea and the child became blind all because of the ignorance of the mother.
